Tell us about thoughts on fragrance?

For me, scents, as well as clothes and hairstyles, can go a long way in revealing a part of yourself. You’re saying something to the world based on the fragrance you chose and it exposes a part of the internal relationship you have with yourself.

We only have five senses, and I think it’s wonderful that there is an art to putting scents together to convey different moods. It’s remarkable the way scent can invoke memory. Whole relationships with people, found in a single moment of breath - that’s really powerful.

You are the face of Magnifique, the new fragrance from Lancôme. What were your first thoughts about the fragrance?
As soon as I put it on it fit - and it is more sensual than anything I have ever tried before. At the same time, it retains the freshness that I love in fragrance. I think it’s a very robust scent, and I think it’s a complicated scent because it marries a spicy element to a floral top note, with subtle but present woody and musky notes underneath. It was very exciting to discover this new scent and a new mode of expression.

Unexpectedly, Magnifique is a great representation of my various personality traits, which is what I think you always look for in a fragrance. It’s not just finding a scent that represents who you are in reality, but one that represents the way you hope to be perceived as well. It’s who you are and who you hope to be.

What emotions does Magnifique bring to mind?

It makes me feel sensual; it makes me feel very womanly. It’s all about passion, joy and intensity.

When preparing for a role, do you think about the fragrance your character would wear?
Absolutely. For me, scent is very important for my characters. I don’t feel like I’ve found them unless a few elements are in place and one of them is their fragrance. Sometimes it can be a simple scent. I played one character and her scent was lavender, so I just doused myself in lavender for the entire film. I think everyone was happy when the movie wrapped! Right now I’m preparing for a new role and I really think I need to go perfume shopping for her.

What do you think of Paris?
I love Paris. I find that it’s a wonderful city in which to let your imagination run wild, and it’s a wonderful city to dream in. Any city that makes pleasure a priority is one I consider highly evolved. I love to spend time there.
One of my favorite aspects of Paris is the light, particularly the way the it changes throughout the day. It can be subtle and dramatic at the same time with many different elements playing off of each other. I also love how the city unfolds so beautifully, the way it’s sprawling but consistent. It’s just fabulous.

Tell us about the shooting of the campaign for Magnifique.
It was very different from anything I’d ever done before. It didn’t feel like it was just a campaign film, but much more actually. We have made a piece of art with this campaign. Lancôme is a company that’s so open and accepting of emotion and really embraces the idea of sincerity and that there was so much potential for it to be an enduring image.

This campaign is a short film, where we tell a story, with a perspective and a point of view which I believe in. It’s been such a spectacular collaboration with Lancôme and I’m so happy with it that I hope everyone else does too. It really was an amazing experience and I absolutely love this campaign.

Tell us about the advertising print image for Magnifique.
For me, what the picture in the campaign represents is not an actual woman, but an emotion. You see the Magnifique woman, getting her hand kissed and there is joy in her eyes, but also quite a bit of mystery. It’s more about the feeling it conveys as opposed to the actual, literal image. I think the image conveys power, joy and mystery.
